As part of a 29 acre masterplan developed by Landscape Architects Sites Southwest on the original site of the Bachechi family farm, Bernalillo County commissioned an Environmental Education Building, a County Equipment Maintenance Building, a Caretaker’s Residence, an Outdoor Classroom and a Memorial Garden. The architecture is intended to reinforce the sustainable ethic represented in the landscape design, and all share generouse views to the landscape and access to Bachechi Open Space features including nature walks, bird-watching areas, and the Rio Grande Bosque Trails. Environmental Education Building Phase 1 The 2,250 sf Environmental Education Building aims to serve a wide array of students, providing a flexible location in which a variety of indoor and outdoor activities can occur including laboratory analysis of the bosque. The classroom/lab will be used by school groups, community organizations, and for Bernalillo County Open Space events which will include lectures, demonstrations, and multi-media presentations for all ages. The Entry/Lobby and Corridor have been designed to serve as exhibition space with gallery lighting and wall-backing. The building will include a full solar PV system integrated with a trellis and a wide range of energy efficiency features that will be part of a Bernalillo County pilot program to minimize long term operations costs and maintenance. The mechanical room will be glazed to display the systems and energy useage to visitors. |
