Located in the historic Albuquerque Nob Hill district, this addition pushes to the setbacks, wrapping library / gallery, and studio spaces around the existing house to create a private courtyard animated by shadow and light. Stainless steel and mirrored walls suggest further depth of view. Simple orthogonal forms are broken by a single angle derived from the winter solstice sunrise.
A new exercise room bridges between existing courtyards and the new breezeway, leading to the library gallery. Above, the roof deck frames a view of the Sandia Mountains. The existing kitchen opens onto a covered patio for outdoor dining, doubling as a threshold to the new garage and workshop. A full solar photovoltaic system powering both the new addition and existing house is visible on the garage roof. Exposed fasteners on the metal clad walls, courtyard pavers, high-gloss paint ceilings and tectum ceilings texturally contrast the simple stucco volumes. Cost per square foot was approximately $200.
