The original adobe home is a classic North Valley property, set amidst mature cottonwoods and gardens. A small addition provides an internal connection between the main house and an existing guest house, bringing natural light into the main living spaces and giving the original house a more direct connection to established gardens and outdoor living spaces.
The light tower is at the center of the addition, expanding the existing great room and washing it with high natural light and ventilation. Incorporated into the north half of the tower is a new master shower that takes advantage of the tower’s volume, creating an unexpected space in the reconfigured master suite. Clad in rusted corrugated metal, the tower harmonizes with the earthy adobe walls while expressing itself as a discreet form. The sunroom brings the main house and guest house together while providing more living space and allowing a visual axis between south gardens and an existing courtyard. Steel trellises provide shade and define outdoor living areas. Interior walls and openings have been reconfigured to streamline circulation and to refine the living spaces.
