| A new carport, circular driveway and porch provide off-street parking and much needed shade for a tough western sun exposure on the house and entry sequence. All components are intended to be zero maintenance and all finshes naturally patina. The black iron steel frame will slowly rust while the galvanized metal roof provides subtle light reflections. The asymmetric column layout minimizes the number of columns and keeps them out of car and pedestrian desire lines. The canopy is held off the existing house to let light glance the wall surface and allow the house and canopy to move separately. A generous cast-in-place concrete porch allows room for staging and planters. The screed finish on the steps provides winter traction and vignettes the porch with the crusher-fines driveway. Water from the canopy roof is collected in a planted area that also screens the cars from the street. A new gabion wall is filled with concrete from a demolished sidewalk. |
