The existing 4,400 sf classroom will be fully renovated to maximize energy efficiency for new computer labs and classrooms. The classrooms will have balanced natural lighting from both the north and south with direct sun controlled for glare. The new glazing system will be from thermally broken storefront with high performance 1” insulated glazing. Polycarbonate panels along the interior corridor maximize daylight to the classrooms. On the south elevation, a low-mass trombe wall system of metal studs and cement board cladding will be used to pre-heat air for the roof top gas-fired mechanical units. A 1,000 gallon above ground cistern will be used to collect a portion of the roof water and gravity-fed adjacent planters. Roof and wall insulation will be increased with a spray-in icynene. Existing masonry walls will receive additional rigid insulation. Low VOC paint and carpet will be used. Existing restrooms will be renovated to meet current ADA standards. Skylights will be added to interior offices and restrooms that do not have access to natural light. The roof will be replaced with a reflective white TPO membrane.
